Data Recovery Techniques:  Methods Applied For Physical and Logical Damages

Data recovery is essential both for physical and logical damages.  Physically damaged files are those that involve storage media like CD-ROMs, hard disks and tapes.  This causes data to be lost extending to the damage of logical structures of the system.  Logical damages on the other hand, are those that result from power outages causing failure in transferring files into a storage media.

Employing data recovery services for these two types of file damages are varied.  The techniques vary depending on the issues to be solved.  Below, you will find the data recovery techniques to restore your files.  They are sorted according to the types of damages.

Data recovery techniques after physical damages

When CD-ROMs have scratches on its surfaces or when tapes break, then it is said to be physically-damaged.  The same concept applies to hard disks encountering mechanical failures.  Most people find it hard to restore files with this damage.  The following data recovery techniques are advised:

•    Replace parts in the hard disk.  Replacing parts in the hard disk makes the disk reusable.  However, this may not be suitable when a logical damage is present in the disk.

•    Specialized disk-imaging process.  When physical damages are not solved by simple replacement of parts from the hard disk, this method is used.  The process helps restore every readable portion of the structure.  The image will then be saved to another medium thus allowing reconstruction of the original file.

Data recovery techniques after logical damages

Logical damages place the file system in a so-called inconsistent state.  Symptoms to these problems include negative amounts of free space reported by drivers, system crashes or even data loss.  The most common solutions employed for this scenario are:

•    Repair tools.  Depending on the program, correcting inconsistencies produced by logical damages become possible.  Data recovery for various operating systems may be done as follows:  Linux with the use of the fsck utility; Mac OS uses the disk utility; and Microsoft Windows makes use of the chkdsk function.

•    Third party utilities.  Examples of these tools are The Sleuth Kit and The Coroners Toolkit.  Another utility is TestDisk known to be helpful in reconstructing corrupted partition tables.  These are highly favorable because they allow data recovery even if the OS repair tools do not recognize the disks.

These data recovery techniques allow people to understand that file data recovery is indeed possible.  Instructions for these methods are readily available.  However, you are still encouraged to seek help from professionals.
