Why Digital Downloading Makes Sense for the Environment
Years and years ago, there was no such thing as digital downloading. The use of computers is not as widespread yet, so ordinary folk did not have to bother with knowing the difference between hardware and software. We also bought our music only from record stores and only in the form of vinyl records and tapes because we did not have CDs yet back then.
These days, digital downloading is possible wherever there is a computer with a reliable Internet connection. The Apple iTunes store is a popular source for movies and music that can be downloaded for a price. If we want new software, we just visit an online store and buy the digital downloading rights.
Digital downloading simplifies the process of buying music, videos, electronic games and software. Needless to say, it is also good for the environment. The most obvious environmental benefit that downloading such files straight from the seller is that we do not have to drive to a physical store just to buy CDs and DVDs. Because you do not have to drive, you do not have to release carbon exhaust into the atmosphere.
Another benefit that digital downloading gives is that it helps us save on non-renewable resources. Those CDs and DVDs and their jewel cases are made of plastic. The manuals, the sleeves on the jewel cases and the other documents that come with the CD are often printed on thick, glossy paper with glowing colors. Such printouts are hard to recycle. Digital downloading does away with the use of such resources.
And yet another benefit to digital downloading is that we can relax and do other things while we wait for our computer to finish the download. We can also do away with the need to clean up the clutter that CDs and DVDs create on our desks, and the thought of it can be relaxing too.
