Software Piracy Protection and Security
The word “pirate” is very confusing in the computer world since it has little resemblance to what real pirates do. Sea pirates keep all the plundered goods for themselves while computer pirates make their “loot” available to everyone that has some connection to the internet. Intellectual property is very vulnerable since access to it is relatively easier than for example the access to a solid steel safe with a locker combination. For this reason, software piracy is one of the fastest growing crimes in world. A considerable amount of time and money is being spent on research and development for the prevention of software piracy. So far, the best way to prevent software piracy is to employ software DRM solutions in order to shield the software from any unauthorized use.
Damages caused by piracy
The financial damages from piracy totaled around 40%, which means that a lot of effort put by many people working on a product as a team is going unrewarded. These losses are compensated by money that comes from the pockets of regular customers. At the same time, developers and designers are de-motivated by having to receive lesser revenues.
There is one really good side of pirated products. Generally, computer software cannot be fully appreciated from trial versions. In a demo version, only few features are available and customers receive unrealistic impression of the program they are about to buy. Pirated copies have these special “features” unlocked and customers can fully test the product before going to the store for a legal copy.
If one needs a very specific type of software and don’t have the money to buy all available copies of competing companies and compare – pirated copies are the best solution. And of course they are the cheapest. It’s a virtual test drive, which demo products simply cannot offer because of the limits they carry. But this should not motivate you to software piracy.
Intellectual property is by far more expensive than, let’s say, real estate property. Computer pirates are the “magicians” of the 21st century because it is only now the time when every piece of valuable information is stored in binaries somewhere on a server, password protected. Even though there are many security measures besides the omni-present password, breaking into someone’s computer seems much easier than robbing a bank!
Piracy is, of course, illegal and will remain an outlaw act despite its few good sides. For this reason software piracy protection becomes all the more important.
