One move that the company has made has been to switch to an LEED roasting facility, which is more energy efficient and does not harm the environment the way the older roasting processes do. One big waste factor when it comes to Starbucks is the disposable cups, and these cups constitute a significant amount of waste for the company. In an effort to minimize this waste, the company has switched to paper cups which use recycled fiber and plastic cups which does less environmental damage than the previous plastic cups used. This coffee company has taken big steps forward and are on track to meet their goal of reducing disposable waste substantially by the year 2015.
Another way that Starbucks has taken steps to reduce their damage on the earth and environment is with their mug pledge program. Consumers in the United States and in Canada can receive a discount of ten cents by bringing their own mug to the store. Each time this is done a paper or plastic cup is not used, and this can have a big impact on the amount of waste and garbage that are created. For consumers who do not bring a mug with them but want to be more environmentally friendly, it is possible to request a ceramic mug if you will be drinking your beverage on the premises. If one out of every five people used a reusable mug instead of a disposable cup, the amount of waste would be reduced by twenty percent. This can really add up when you consider the number of stores and the amount of customers that Starbucks serves every single day. This one step can have a drastic effect on the environment in a very positive way.
