Are Biofuels Responsible For World Hunger And Higher Food Costs?
Many experts and leaders around the world have blamed the production of biofuels on a global food shortage and an increase in the price of available food. This is not necessarily true though, and science shows that there is enough food grown each year to feed the entire global population, however much of this food is diverted from the food supply for a number of reasons. Biofuels are not one of these though, because these fuels can be made from many sources that have no effect on the food supply or prices around the world. Most of the food exported from the United States is not intended for human consumption, but instead is used as livestock feed. Some corn is used to create ethanol, but this is also feed corn and not corn that is part of the human food supply. Biofuels are an important step in preventing the emissions of greenhouse gases and environmental damage.
Much of the global hunger problem stems not from biofuels but from corrupt third world governments, black markets in undeveloped countries, and dictators and military leaders. Much of the food aid from countries around the world, including the United States, will never reach the intended recipients but instead will be seized and used for other purposes instead. Biofuels do not need corn, soybeans, or other edible crops, there are alternatives like rapeseed, castor, and jojoba plants that do not require fertile land. Algae, mold, and other sources of biofuel are also being discovered, further eliminating the need for food crops to produce environmentally friendly biofuel. Many of those who speak out against biofuels do so out of a fear that the world food supply will diminish, driving up prices and causing hunger and famine. This does not have to be the case, and biofuels from non-food sources may be the main fuel sources of tomorrow.
