Be Protected Against Internet Piracy
Piracy is one of the biggest problems that cropped up because of the many wonders of the Internet. By definition, piracy is the unauthorized use, duplication, or distribution of copyrighted intellectual property in the form of music, books, movies, TV shows, and software. The software and the entertainment industries are the biggest victims of piracy. Physical piracy, which means the duplication and sale of actual CD or DVD copies of software, songs, or movies, is enough problem, but the Internet has made the piracy even more rampant.
Nowadays, software, songs, movies, and TV shows are all illegally distributed online in digital form. Now, people can download such resources from the Internet without any tool other than a computer and an Internet connection. Unlike in physical piracy where various equipments are still needed, Internet piracy does not cost the pirates anything at all.
Internet piracy entered the spotlight following the success of Napster, an online service where users were able to exchange unlimited music files for free through P2P or peer-to-peer networking. Soon enough, more similar programs were offered even after Napster was forced to shut down, and the newer programs were also upgraded that they offered not just music sharing but sharing of software and videos as well.
Instead of trying to fight the development of digital music, some programs such as iTunes by Apple, Inc. turned online music sharing legal by selling the songs for 99 cents each. Nonetheless, free P2P sharing still thrives. So make sure you’re not helping Internet piracy develop further. Be protected from Internet piracy and online scams.
As a user, make sure that everything you get online is authentic. When buying or downloading anything online, look for proofs of authenticity. Always ask for licenses and service policies. Also, don’t be fooled by too affordable software. Check the regular price of the software you’re interested in and don’t buy anything that strays too far. If you see an outrageously cheap price, you can be sure that piracy is not that far behind.
Aside from that, before you avail of anything online, check out the online store you’re buying from. For music, it would be best to trust only reliable providers such as iTunes. If buying from a less popular site, do a background check first to make sure the site can be trusted. In the process, check out the Internet payment system used by the site to ensure that all transactions are secure. And when you buy, always keep a copy of your receipts. If you ever discover that you have been victimized by piracy, the receipts can come in handy when you decide to file a complaint.
Pirated files also pose yet another danger. Since their sources are obviously not to be trusted, some of the files actually bring viruses that can attack your computer.
Various anti-Internet piracy laws are now in the works, but until a law that actually works effectively against Internet piracy is finalized, it is important for you to take the necessary precautions to ensure your own safety against pirated digital software, music, and video files.
