Understanding the Nature of Data Forensics
Data forensics might sound like something that could be a hard concept to grasp however, the term is more technical than the actual meaning of it. Data forensics is the extraction of certain information from large amounts of data that are collected on a hard drive or database and used in legal matters such as Enron, Martha Stewart’s investment fraud, and illegal use of secured information.
The way hard drives store information is unique in the way that files are never completely deleted or erased. Once you delete a file even though you can’t gain access to it the file still remains even if only in fragments. This method can be used to find these files, restore them, and copy them. This can be extremely beneficial in the digital world because even if the trail of evidence has been erased, it can be found.
Most data forensics issues are used in legal matters and can disclose the true nature of things. This is not an easy process to say the least since there can be millions of files on a hard drive or computer system. Data forensics teams have the ability to find that one in a million file that can be hidden or even deleted.
Due to the modern world being so dependent on computer systems there is always a trail of breadcrumbs that can be traced whether through IP addresses or computer activity. This has been an enormous help to companies that face fraudulent law-suits or employee theft and scams. Data forensics or computer investigation is a new tool in the pursuit of truth in legal matters that pertain to these instances.
However, this new world “Sherlock Holmes” way of finding evidence and obtaining truth can only be done when the same hard drive has been used over a course of time that is linked to the said case. While this can be an invaluable asset to many, the time and money that goes into retrieving information of this magnitude must be certain before the investigation can occur. As life becomes easier with the use of computers so does the access to times, dates, records, messages, and files that are transferred and saved in these modern day wonders.
