Creating and Protecting your Passwords
A password is one way of a computer system verifying who you are in order to enable you to access websites that you have joined including websites that deal with your personal information. If someone else gets your passwords, they can easily log into any website you use and access your personal information, stealing your identity and financial information.
For this reason you must learn how to create strong passwords and protect them from outsiders. In order to create a strong password you should make your passwords easy for you to remember but hard for someone else to guess. A combination of letters, numbers and symbols should be used when you create your passwords and they should be no less than 6 characters long. A good rule to follow is to use a simple saying like, “John has 2 dogs and 4 cats”, making your password Jh2D&4C. Using the first letter of each word and a numeral for the numbers creates a password that not many people can guess. In addition, using symbols such as the “&” for the word and “@” for at can increase the security of your password and make guessing it virtually impossible.
When you select a strong password, you will want to protect it from hackers. Writing your passwords to all your most visited websites on a post-it-note and plastering it on your monitor is not a good idea. Reject emails that tell you your password on a specific site has been compromised and you must go to the link within the email to verify your user information. Do not tell others what your passwords are unless you plan on changing it after you have told them. Instead you can use the sites own option of remembering your password, download a program that encrypts your passwords so others cannot obtain them or use hot keys on your keyboard to program your passwords into. Many keyboards allow you to program hotkeys for various functions. Using them to program your passwords on can save you a large headache in the future and save your personal information from being stolen.
