Green Living Tips: Power Up Your Home with Wind Power

Green living is all about changing the way you do things so that you would lessen your impact on the environment.  In this way, you get to save the environment and save money as well.  One way by which you can implement green living habits is by using sources of energy that are clean, renewable and less dependent on fossil fuels.  Wind power is one such source of energy.

As its name suggests, wind power involves harnessing the energy of the wind.  Here, wind power generators that make use of windmills and wind turbines are utilized to provide heat and electricity in a household.  There are many advantages to using energy harvested from the wind, and there are also some disadvantages.  To be able to understand wind power more, you need to be able to understand both the benefits and drawbacks to harnessing the wind.

The Advantages of Wind Power

These are the advantages you can enjoy when you use energy generated from the wind.

1. Wind energy is free.  When you harness the energy of the wind, you do not have to pay for anything.  Since your wind generator is off the general power grid, you do not have to pay fees to your company for generating and distributing electricity to your household.

2. Wind energy requires little capital.  Unlike what many people think, setting up a wind generator and a windmill is not that expensive.  There are many DIY guides out there that teach you how to assemble your own wind turbine, with the materials costing less than $300.  That is cheap, compared to what you have to pay the power company month after month.

3. Wind energy is clean.  Since you do not use fossil fuels to generate wind energy, you are not releasing carbon exhaust to the environment.  Wind energy is just energy from moving air.  Air is clean and does not produce any harmful side products.

4. Wind energy is good for remote areas.  If you live in the rural areas, far from the city, you would need an alternative source of energy in case of emergencies or mishaps.  Wind energy is an ideal alternative source of energy.

The Disadvantages of Wind Power

Inasmuch as wind power has a number of considerable advantages, it also has a few drawbacks.  These drawbacks are:

1. Wind turbines can be noisy.  One of the reasons why people are not too keen on using wind energy is that wind turbines can create too much noise.  Even if your wind turbine is not close to your house, it is possible for you to be disturbed by the noise.  If you have neighbors living close to you, they may complain a lot about your wind generator.

2. Wind turbines are dependent on weather.  Because it runs on wind, windmills are dependent on weather conditions.  You can store more power if it is windy.  If it is not, you would not have any.

Regardless of the disadvantages that using wind power presents, wind power nonetheless is a great alternative as an energy source.  If you are serious about green living, you should consider harvesting energy from the wind seriously.
