Green IT is a term coined to describe the study and applications on how Electronic or IT equipment could save on power.
What is Green IT?
Green IT is a term coined to describe the study and applications on how Electronic or IT equipment could save on power. This is also referred to as Green Computing. With the goal to produce environmentally friendly equipment, green IT has gained popularity worldwide. What are the recent technological advancements with this study? What are the applications and equipment that are now available?
Government Programs
There are many different government agencies that implement and impose the utilization of green computing. The Energy Star program was revised to be stricter on its implementation of efficiency requirements and standard in IT equipments. Recycling of old computers and electronic devises are encouraged. In fact, currently there are 26 US states that have recycling programs for old computers and other electronic devises.
Initiatives of Industry
CSCI or Climate Savers Computing Initiative disseminates information on “green” or environmentally friendly products and devices to its organization members. This also introduces information on how to save power on PC use.
Green Computing Impact Organization is also an effort to disseminate useful information on how to be responsible users of computers in such as way that we all could help save on power consumption.
Green Electronic Council established the EPEAT standard on measuring the efficiency of the IT devices based on power consumption and many other categories. EPEAT refers to Electronic Products Environmental Assessment Tool.
Other efforts to save on power consumption are propagated by the following: The Green Grid, and International Professional Practice Partnership.
There are developed applications that are geared to produce results in saving on power consumption:
Terminal Servers
Terminal Servers is one of the green methods. On this, there is a centralized server where the computing takes place whereas the results as well as the operating system are also experienced virtually by the end user, using a client computer. A few applications include Terminal Services , Aqua Connect Terminal Server, and the Linux Terminal Server Project .
Power Management
You can observe that there is a power saving mode on the monitor—that once the computer is inactive, the monitor would display the screen saver, then it turns off for some time.
LED
There are new monitors nowadays that use Light-emitting diode in display. LED emits too little heat and so very low in power consumption. This saves energy.
Telecommuting
Nowadays, telecommuting has been utilized by companies not only because it saves money but also because it saves energy. Now this is used worldwide as a method for green IT.
