Many have been said about spyware attacks but little do we know about it. What is a spyware? How do you know that you have been infected by it? How could you protect yourself from it? The following seeks to understand the basics on spyware protection.

What is Spyware?

It is defined by many as malicious programs that are installed on your computer without your consent or knowledge. Others also define spyware as any program that collects and transmit your personal information without your knowledge. 

It can be installed on your system without you knowing it by attaching itself to a useful software program or by simply clicking on pop-up ads on any websites. There are risks and damages that a spyware can do, and that includes the following:

Identity Theft and Fraud 

With its nature, a spyware could transmit your credit card information, password, and bank account information. In fact, the estimate is 27.3 million Americans have been victims of identity theft and $48 billions were reported to have incurred financial losses. 

Misleading Advertisements 

Many spyware could be acquired by clicking on pop-up ads. Some of these ads may lead you to some websites that has flickering banners that could irritate users. Furthermore, some of these sites could have pornographic content that are offensive. In addition, the three most common sources of spyware are pornographic sites, instant messaging, and file sharing programs.  

Other harmful risks include: affiliate fraud; can ruin personal relationships through spying on your loved ones, among others.  So, how do you protect yourself from this harmful program?

Download programs only from reliable source. You should make sure that the software programs that you’re downloading come from a genuine and reliable source. 

Use updated and Authentic Antispyware programs. There are many different software programs that you can use.  However, you should make sure that they’re genuine. Other programs could only do so much, and do more damage than good. Also, make sure to update them online because these malicious programs are piling up fast. 

Reinstall OS. If your Operating system has been infected by spywares, and it’s already too late to repair the registry because it has already been damaged, or some of them could not be removed, you can reinstall your operating system to ensure that everything in it has been deleted. Newly installed OS, surely is one way to protect yourself from spyware.
